The Only-begotten Son

Georges André

('Monogenes', 'eingeborener Sohn', 'only-begotten Son'): He whom God has "given" (John 3:16): "his unspeakable gift" (2 Corinthians 9:15).

He is the Son:

a. eternal in his existence (John 1:1);

has not been created (1:3): "All things were created through him and for him; and he is before all things" (Colossians 1:16-17); in glory with the Father "before the world was" (John 17:5); object of his eternal love, "Father ... thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world." (v. 24); in an unfathomable communion with him: "The only begotten Son who is in the bosom of the Father" (John 1:18).

b. as generated or begotten on the earth (Psalm 2:7, Hebrews 1:5,10:5)

"You have prepared a body for me," inscrutable mystery of his birth, as the angel said to Mary: "The Holy Spirit shall come upon thee, and power of the Highest overshadow thee, wherefore the holy thing also which shall be born shall be called Son of God. "(Luke 1:35).
At the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan as at his transfiguration on the mountain, the Father's voice was heard: "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased."

c. as risen:

"His Son, born of the seed of David according to the flesh, determined (or declared) Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead" (Romans 1:4). And let us remember that this is his testimony to be the Son of God that was condemned by the Sanhedrin (Matthew 26:63-66, Luke 22:70-71).
